78% of South African Grade 4 learners could not read for meaning, emphasising the urgent need for early literacy interventions.
Through SLG’s Social and Economic Development (SED) programme, the Group partnered with the Mikhulu Trust to provide much-needed literacy support to communities. The Book-Sharing Programme empowered parents in Alexandra (Gauteng) and KwaZulu-Natal by providing wordless picture books and trained facilitators. These resources helped parents engage in interactive reading sessions, fostering cognitive development in their children during these crucial early years.
By supporting this initiative, SLG addressed literacy challenges while investing in the future of communities—ensuring every child had the opportunity to thrive. Together, lasting change was created, one book at a time.
